About
Between a free register and a sales team.
Notum is for the person who has a name in mind and wants to know what is already on the UK trade marks register before the money goes out.
Illustrative
The gap
The UK trade marks register is public and free to search. It is also built to find exact matches, and trade mark disputes are rarely about exact matches. They are about the name that sounds like yours, looks like yours or means what yours means.
The services that measure that kind of likeness, and keep watching after a mark is filed, have mostly been built for firms and sold through a sales team. A founder with a shortlist on a napkin has been left with the exact-match search, and with the chance of a solicitor’s letter after the signs go up.
What Notum does about it
Notum checks a proposed name against UK trade marks register records by sound, by look and by meaning, and shows its working. It turns what a business does into trade mark classes, ends each check in one sentence with its reasons and a next step, and keeps watching after you file. The prices at launch are set for a small business, and are on the pricing page.
Four principles
Show the working
Every result carries its reasons: the sounds, the letters and the idea two names share. You can judge a score for yourself, and so can your attorney.
State the coverage
Every result names the register and the dates it read, and what it did not read. Today that includes a gap in the years between 2018 and 2025, set out below and on the questions page.
Never say safe
Nothing close in what was read is a good sign for that register alone. Notum says open water, and never that a name is safe to use.
A professional for the decision
Notum is the first look, not the advice. For the name you decide to file, take it to a trade mark attorney. Notum does not file for you.
Examples on this site use invented marks and proprietors, and are labelled. How the scoring is checked is on the accuracy page.
What a result covers today
A search reads UK trade marks filed up to 28 January 2018 and those published in the Trade Marks Journal since 19 September 2025. It does not read marks published between February 2018 and September 2025, and many of those are live registrations. They are being added.
A clear result is not clearance. Check the IPO register before you file or use a mark. EU and international marks are not covered.
Who is behind it
Notum is an Avanti Mind company. The company’s registered details are on the trust page.
